Salbutamol
Indications/Uses
Management & prevention of asthma attack. Routine management of chronic bronchospasm unresponsive to conventional therapy. Treatment of acute severe asthma (status asthmaticus).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn Initially 2.5 mg, then may be increased to 5 mg. May be repeated 4 times daily. Severe airways obstruction Adult Up to 40 mg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Not to be used to arrest uncomplicated premature labour or threatened abortion.
Special Precautions
Not to be inj or swallowed. Sudden & progressive deterioration in asthma control. Patients known to have received large doses of other sympathomimetics; thyrotoxicosis. Acute angle-closure glaucoma in combination w/ ipratropium Br. Avoid eyes from getting contact w/ the soln or mist. Monitor serum K levels in case of hypokalemia. Concomitant use w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids, diuretics; hypoxia in acute severe asthma. Discontinue use if paradoxical bronchospasm occur. Induced reversible metabolic changes (eg, increased blood sugar levels) & ketoacidosis may develop in diabetic patient. Lactic acidosis in association w/ high therapeutic doses of IV & nebulized short-acting β-agonist therapy. Monitor for elevated serum lactate & metabolic acidosis development. Pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation. Infants <18 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Not to be prescribed w/ non-selective β-blockers eg, propranolol. Not contraindicated w/ MAOIs.
